New Carpet? 4 Steps To Cleaner Carpets

Posted on

If you've recently invested in new carpeting, you want to make sure it lasts as long as possible. The best way to do that is to make sure it stays clean. Vacuuming your carpet at least once a week will get rid of the dirt particles that can grind away at the delicate fibers. In addition, you should also shampoo your carpeting at least once a month. Here are four tips that will help get your carpet as clean as it can be.

Vacuum Before and After Shampooing

To get your carpets as clean as possible, you need to make sure you vacuum before and after use your carpet cleaner. Vacuuming prior to shampooing the carpets will remove large particles of dirt from down inside the fibers. Vacuuming after you shampoo will ensure that you remove the particles of dirt that may have attached themselves to the fibers while your carpets were drying. When vacuuming your carpets after you've shampooed, be sure to begin with an empty dirt canister. This will ensure that you don't spread dirt on your clean carpet.

Pretreat High-Traffic Areas

High-traffic areas and stains will need special treatment prior to shampooing your carpets. Fill a spray bottle with warm water and add a drop or two of mild laundry detergent. Apply a thin layer of the cleaning solution to stains and high-traffic areas. Allow the solution to soak into the carpet fibers for about 15 minutes before shampooing your carpets.

Use Less Soap

When it comes to adding detergent to your carpet shampooer, it's important to remember that less is more. While you might think that adding more detergent would get your carpets cleaner, that isn't true. In fact, the more soap you use, the more suds are created. Unfortunately, those suds can leave a soapy residue that act like a dirt magnet on your clean carpets. To get your carpets their cleanest, and prevent that soapy residue, use about 1 tablespoon of carpet detergent for every gallon of hot water you use.

Let Your Carpet Dry Thoroughly

Once you've cleaned your carpets, open up all the doors and windows in the room. The ventilation will help dry your carpets more quickly. Don't walk on your carpets until your carpet has dried thoroughly. Walking on your carpets while they're still damp could cause dirt to stick to the fibers.

If you have new carpeting, you want to make sure you take proper care of it. That includes keeping it clean. To keep your carpets looking their best, have them professionally cleaned once a year. The tips provided here will help you extend the life of your carpeting by keeping them clean between professional cleanings. For more information, contact a company like Doug's Rug Spa
