Getting A New Golden Retriever? 2 Ways It Can Affect Your Carpeting

Posted on

Golden retrievers are great family dogs and are one of the most popular breeds in the United States. There are other things that come along with a golden retriever, however, that you may not think so popular, such as how much they shed and their distinct smell. If you are planning to get a new golden retriever puppy, below is some information on how to deal with the shedding and odors.

Shedding

Golden retrievers are long-haired and they shed a lot throughout the year. The shedding is even worse in the late spring when they shed their coat for the upcoming heat. Dogs also shed their hair to allow new hair to grow in. The fallen hair lands on the floor or it gets ensnared in your golden's coat.

Plan on keeping the vacuum out because you will have to vacuum a lot to keep control of the hair. If you do not, the hair can get embedded in the carpet fibers, making it even harder to remove.  Vacuum over the carpet twice, in alternating directions, to help get the stubborn hair that doesn't want to come out.

You can rub a pumice stone gently over the surface of the carpet to remove hair, and running damp rubber gloves over the carpet works well.

There is not much you can do to prevent the shedding except to brush your golden once a day, especially their undercoat. You can get special brushes that are designed to remove loose hair.

Take your dog to a groomer and have their hair cut for the hot summer.  This will not only cut down on the shedding, but your dog will appreciate it too.

Odors

All dogs can cause odor in a home, but golden retrievers have a distinctive body odor that is not pleasant and does not go away even after a bath. You may also find this odor in your carpeting.

To make the carpeting smell fresh again, you can use baking soda. Sprinkle the baking soda liberally over the carpeting and let it sit for 24 hours. This will give the baking soda time to absorb all the odors.

After 24 hours, vacuum the carpeting and it should smell fresh. To make your carpet smell even fresher, rent a carpet cleaner to clean the carpeting.

You can also find pet sprays at the pet store that you can spray on your carpeting whenever you like to make it smell fresh.

If your carpeting is old, you should consider installing new carpeting. Choose a golden color for the carpeting and your golden retriever's hair will not be as noticeable. This is helpful if you have a day that you do not have time to vacuum. Contact a company like Carpet Weaver's for more information about installing new carpeting and keeping it clean.
